Video screening with works by Rebecca Goyette
EVBG presents the two films "Ghost Bitch U.S.A." and "Ghost Bitch: Arise from the Gallows" by US-American artist Rebecca Goyette in a special fundraising screening hosted by the CLUB.
Goyette creates persona-based works that poke holes in Puritanical sexual mores. Her latest alter ego Ghost Bitch is an apparition of her direct ancestor, Rebecca Nurse who was hanged as a witch in the Salem Witch trials of the late 17th century. Ghost Bitch is a history-reenacting aerialist who gets hanged each day and is a dominatrix by night, as part of an enterprising coven serving tourists in Salem, Massachusetts. Role-playing history for public consumption on stage and for intimate purposes proves challenging to Ghost Bitch. Goyette’s internal question manifests through the lens of Ghost Bitch: How do we protect ourselves from being metaphorically hanged and repeating our traumas in ghost form?
In "Ghost Bitch U.S.A." we follow the heroine as she and her supporting cast of characters rectify paternal betrayal, alluding to modern politics and personal trauma, possibly ensnaring a certain "President-elect" with purportedly small hands.
